Eighth Night

Happy Eighth night of Hanukkah!

As the last night menorah candles burned down I captured the final moments!

All photos are taken handheld with my Olympus 60mm macro. As the room was otherwise quite dark, I stabilized the shots with elbows resting on the table.

Eyeball These

Mother's Day brought us to a place called "Fields of Flowers" in Westfield, Mass where we bought some plants for my mother-in-law. While Deb and her mom went around buying various perennials, I snapped a few shots.

Plant Glow

Believe it or not, there's a type of Ice Plant called Delosperma Fire Spinner. Is that like an oxymoron or something?

Fire and Ice

Fuchsia plants have incredibly highly saturated colors, including fuchsia, of course. It is a bit difficult to take a macro photo (without focus stacking) of a complete Fuchsia flower because it is a large flower and distance from the lens varies a lot. Here I decided to highlight the folds. If you sort of squint and look at the lower leftish side of this image you might see why I gave this photo the title I did.

Purple Heart

A lot of little explosions going on in this one:

White Sparklers

At this point, we returned to my in-laws' house to plant the newly purchased flowers. Deb does that part, and she's very good at it. Meanwhile I take pictures. The blue sky pulled me in to take this next shot of the wonderful Dogwood already residing on the property.

This little guy decided to visit next to Deb while she planted the flowers in the bed. Do you know the difference between a frog and a toad? In this case, the rough skin gives it away. This is a toad.

Jumping Visitor

This is a different shot where I got in closer. I'd guesstimate the toad was around 3 inches in length. I was glad he didn't decide to jump on my lens.

Had a Few Too Many

And, finally, an example of a planted plant, comfortable in its new location.

Macro Monday

The buds and blossoms of spring merit a closer look. Actually, a really close look.
Today's post contains some recent favorite shots taken with my 60mm macro lens, some at 1:1 magnification. All photos are taken with natural light and with no props to modify the light; all photos are handheld except for one taken with a tripod.

Our redbud tree is remarkably enjoyable to observe this time of year. Here's a sample taken after a recent rain.

While walking around the Ashland Reservoir, I met a woman walking in the opposite direction who told me to look for this turtle she saw a few minutes earlier on her walk. No way I would have noticed this small creature, an inch in length, had I not received a warning. She told me about it because she saw I was taking pictures. The turtle's color was extremely dark, so it made for an extra photographic challenge to take some of his highlights out of the shadows. Needless to say, the end of my macro lens was larger than the turtle and less than an inch away to take this photo.

Dragonfly Festival

I had the privilege of photographing the 2nd annual Ashland Dragonfly Festival.  This is a free fair put on by the Ashland Arts Alliance.  The August 15 event began at 4 in the afternoon and continued 'till dusk. Included were several music performances, dancing, vendors selling their crafts, floating torches and luminary lights on Mill Pond, plenty of food to eat, face painting, and many more fun activities.  I took over 600 pictures with my Olympus gear, and 12-40mm lens.  I've chosen to share with you the following images.  Enjoy!
