Cushing 2022

These photos were taken during a stroll around Cushing Memorial Park in Framingham where the trees often show great fall colors every year.

Enjoy!

Mill Pond October Colors

Ashland's Mill Pond is a section of the Sudbury river located adjacent to the town center. It contains a trail called the "Riverwalk" along the edge of the pond. This trail is a small part of the Bay Circuit Trail which is a (not yet completed) 230 mile long trail in the Greater Boston area. The Riverwalk became available when the bridge was completed over a section of the north side of Mill Pond a few years ago. See #6 below for a photo of the bridge.

The Riverwalk shows wonderful colors during the fall season. This post contains photos I took there on October 10 and 11.

Beans in Water

(See also below the first two photos for an update to the original post.)

We eat dry beans that we soak and cook ourselves; they're not from cans. So it is not an uncommon occurrence for beans to be soaking overnight in a pot on the stove. The other day I looked in the pot and decided the water was particularly still and that, despite theoretically being distorted in appearance by being below the surface, the beans were still fairly clear to the eye. Naturally, I had to take a photo or two.

We cook various white beans, black beans, and pinto beans. These first two photos below are of organic pinto beans purchased at the local farmers market.

These were taken hand-held with my macro lens using natural light at 1/20 sec. at f2.8.
The photos got me wondering if, like snowflakes, no two beans are exactly alike, certainly not ones with patterns and wrinkles on them like these.

Good thing I didn't accidentally drop the camera into the pot!

The very next day, we were soaking black beans. They were too dark to photograph while in the water. Sitting just out of the water, after soaking, they looked like the two photos below. Note that black beans turn purple after soaking!

Jaguar Show

I went to a Jaguar show in Sudbury recently. The event was the 2022 Concours d'Elegance, and it was put on by the Jaguar Association of New England (JANE). I don't know much about Jaguar vehicles, so I didn't really understand all the different models or the history, but I still found some fun photos to take of these very stylish cars. Naturally, they were playing some Jaguar and other car songs through the speaker system while I was there; most were British groups, including Beatles songs. The Jaguar's British heritage was the *one* thing I previously knew about for sure.

July 2022 Blooms

Below are photos of some July blooms, all taken in our garden.
Plus one bee.

Here's that bee on butterfly weed:

Always a standout every year, the very "tropical" looking crocosmia is pictured below. I got a kick out of this partial description of crocosmia on Wikipedia: "They have colourful inflorescences of 4 to 20 vivid red and orange subopposite flowers on a divaricately (horizontally) branched stem."

Scenes from Ogunquit

We spent a few days in Ogunquit, Maine enjoying a nice vacation away from the usual routines of home, and also to celebrate our anniversary. Ogunquit has a lot to offer to unwind and relax. We did a fair amount of walking, especially on the famous "Marginal Way" coastal walk going back and forth on it a few times. See the first photo below. Though we've been to Ogunquit before, we were happy to visit again.

Wells, Maine

During an anniversary trip to Ogunquit, Maine, we traveled a short distance north to Wells, and visited the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve. We were delighted to observe the natural beauty of this area, as shown in the photos below.

Park Places

Here are a few selected photos from the Arnold Arboretum, Mass Audubon's Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary, and one from the park otherwise known as our front yard.

This first one is taken at Arnold Arboretum. This was a *huge* tree that had a full canopy of leaves and branches which came to the ground all around.  One could "enter" between the leaves and look up, which I did for this shot.

My son and I visited Mass Audubon's Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary and saw several Red-winged Blackbirds. Here's a male:

Tongue Tied

This photo below is of a female Red-winged Blackbird. They look completely different from the males; it was much easier to identify this bird after seeing all the other (male) Red-winged Blackbirds in the area.

Surface Bloom

I took this next photo of a robin while sitting on our front step. We have a cherry tree in our front yard that birds totally love in June when the cherries appear. Sometimes the birds get so "drunk" on cherries they run into our windows when flying away. We're always alarmed when we hear the thud of bird against a window. Thankfully, they usually survive the encounter.
