Half Moon Bay

Our final day of our recent visit to California included some sights in and around Half Moon Bay.

Here are photos taken just north of Half Moon Bay at Maverick's Beach, which is a destination for big-wave surfers. While we didn't see any surfers, likely due to the low tide, we enjoyed the rock formations and tide pools.

January in July

It's hot around here in July, so I thought I'd cool things down a bit by blogging some winter photos. Today's post contains photos all taken earlier this year, in January.

Here's one of a set of focus-bracketed photos of a tree in the woods. One unexpected side effect of getting several shots all with a slightly different focus point, is that, even if I don't combine them, I can pick the one with the most pleasing focus point.

The next two photos are taken at Ashland Res. They are actually taken with my Nexus 5x cell phone!

The next set of photos are from Lake Waban, at Wellesley College. I was lucky to be there when a large number of ducks decided to visit.

This next set is at Halibut State Park in Rockport.  If you look very closely, you'll see the ducks on the ice near the center of the photo. The first two pictures that follow were also taken with my Nexus 5x cell phone.

Wide-ish Angle at the Res

Normally I use my 150-600mm equivalent lens when I walk around the "Res" to take pictures of ducks and other wildlife, but on this occasion I thought I'd step out of my comfort zone and see what a wider angle might bring me.  This is the polar opposite of shooting close up details of everything which is my usual photographic leaning.  While I don't have a true "wide angle" lens, my Olympus 12-40mm pro lens is fairly wide angle-ish on the short end, where its 24mm equiv. focal length does begin to distort things a bit and gives one that classic wide angle perspective.  All photos on this page were taken with the 12-40 lens.  I had my 75-300mm lens with me as well on the day I took these photos, but I never had the urge to swap lenses.

Part of my inspiration for trying to take more wide angle photos is that my son took some outstanding wide angle shots on one of his recent hiking treks into the Sierra wilderness.  I really appreciated the beauty in this form of photographic expression.

Do you agree?

I love that I can shoot at f2.8 and freeze water with this lens on a not very bright day.  This shot was at 1/500 sec. at ISO 200.
