Palace Birds

After Muir Woods (see previous post) we visited the grounds of San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts in the Marina district. In all my years living in the Bay Area I'd never previously visited the Palace of Fine Arts, so this was a welcome delight for me.

As one can read here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palace_of_Fine_Arts, the Palace was originally constructed for the 1915 Panama–Pacific International Exposition. While I've endeavored to include a few photos of my own of the lagoon and structures of this beautiful site, to see a truly professional rendering of the rotunda and column structure I recommend the image shown here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palace_of_Fine_Arts#/media/File:Palace_of_Fine_Arts_(16794p).jpg, which is an 18-frame panorama stitched together in Lightroom. By sheer coincidence, this happens to be one of the finest pictures in all of Wikipedia, and, in fact, this image was selected as picture of the day on the English Wikipedia for March 26, 2022.

Despite all the above, we didn't go there to see the Palace, but rather to see the birds in the lagoon. We found many gulls and herons enjoying the lagoon environment, as well as sparrows on some of the surrounding trees and shrubbery.

Please enjoy multiple views of some of these fine birds below.

Here are a few photos of the Palace and lagoon. Most of the birds I photographed were in the right, most distant section of the lagoon.

This next photo was taken at Crissy Field Marsh, also known for birding. It is very near the Palace of Fine Arts, located just slightly closer to the Golden Gate Bridge.

Great Blue

On a recent walk around the Ashland Reservoir, I came across a great blue heron standing tall on a rock. I've seen great blue heron's at the reservoir before, however past encounters were from large distances, and often only when the bird was in flight, and so the moments were short-lived.

On this occasion, the bird was still and quiet. As I walked closer to it along the shoreline, I was happy to see that my footsteps did not bother it. So much so, that I was able to sit down and change to my telephoto lens, and despite the delay, the bird hadn't moved at all. I was able to capture a few photos, and would have captured several more except that someone else came along the path with a dog that barked loudly and made some moves in the direction of the bird. Naturally, the great blue heron flew off, something it does majestically since it has a six foot wing span. I love dogs, but not that one:) The owner apologized to me; she'd not even seen the bird herself. I was upset with her dog, but I held my tongue, keeping my opinions to myself.

Because of my position behind some shore trees, the bird was completely hidden from my view when it flew off, so I was unable to get any photos of this dramatic bird in flight. I am comforted only by the fact that, even if I had a clear view, catching good photos of birds in flight is not something I've ever had much success with. Evidently, this was not to be my day to improve on my "in focus birds in flight" ratio.😞

Evening Grocery Trip Side Benefit

An after dinner grocery shopping trip had an unexpected benefit: I happened to be traveling past a picturesque spot at sunset.  Thankfully, I had my "backup" Panasonic ZS-40 camera in the car.  So I pulled over and took some photos.  There were two other photographers and one fisherman at the site.  The fisherman informed me the previous night's sunset was equally enjoyable.

Not only was the sunset wonderful, but the first photo shows a Great Blue Heron appreciating the nearby waterfall.  I was amused that the two other photographers, who were also photographing the Great Blue Heron, were using gigantic heavy lenses on their "full frame" and APS-C gear. One had a 500mm lens that must have been three feet long; I never got a proper answer on the focal length of other one, which was also a few feet in length.  Little did they realize my travel zoom (with its smaller sensor) has a 720mm lens on it, and the entire camera fits in my pocket.

Enjoy the photos!
