Poppy Splash
Poppies have remarkably large delicate paper-thin petals and complex centers; they burst with vibrant color.

Life is a Tree Full of Cherries
By some wonderful quirk of fate, we happen to have the most enjoyable cherry tree in our very own front yard. Not only is it pleasing to behold, it serves up massive amounts of delicious tart cherries this time of year.
Photographing the tree and its cherries is an annual challenge of mine. While prior years have yielded some okay photos, I've not been overly pleased with the results. This year, I chose to make an extra effort to see if I can display the cherries in a way which really shows off their "cherriness." You be the judge, but I think at last I've succeeded.
Note that the cherries are not quite fully ripe in these photos, and that is why their color leans toward orange, rather than true red. Even in the two days or so since these photos were taken prior to this post, they have turned just a bit more red, and less orange. I think the deep orange color shown here gives them a kind of translucency in the sun and gives them more "pop."
Take a look. They are as yummy as they appear. Go nature!
Points of light becoming round diffuse blobs is sometimes referred to as "bokeh" in a photograph. This is a side effect of the background of the image being beyond the current depth of field (area of the picture which is in focus.) The quality of an image's bokeh refers to the smoothness or harshness of the out of focus background blur. It doesn't need to contain smooth round blobs, but if there are any bright lit areas in the background, that is how good "bokeh" typically makes them look. Often this renders photos more pleasing to the eye, and is usually preferred to having everything in sharp focus. However, having the entire frame in focus can be perfectly desired for, say, a wide landscape/scenery shot.
I don't really know who's reading this blog, so I occasionally describe such nerdy photography details as this. If you already know about "bokeh", or don't really care, and just want to look at the pictures, my apologies for the interruption:) After checking out the overall image, look at the bokeh in this next photo.

Snow Review
I've been reviewing several of my 2016 photos, trying to catch up on some long overdue blogging, and wanted to share a few scenes I photographed back in early February. We got an impressive amount of snow during one particular evening just prior to sunset. Here are a few selected shots.

Cushing Park and Farm Pond
Cushing Memorial Park and Farm Pond are adjacent recreational areas for enjoying nature, taking a brisk walk (or a slow one), rollerblading, biking, and/or running. Cushing is on the grounds of a retired military hospital. The hospital buildings no longer exist other than a small church and few small out buildings. Though Cushing Park has mile markers and a paved 1.5 mile loop, there's no path to walk or run all the way around Farm Pond. One can go partway, ... actually "across" Farm Pond, by walking (or running) along a "breakwater" near one end.
Good leaf color and a sunny day make for an unbeatable combination to enjoy a fall picture-taking session.
Often times, clouds make photos a lot more interesting than a solid blue sky. I was lucky to visit Cushing on such a day.
Many Ring-billed gulls enjoy the scenery at Farm Pond.

Zion Day Two and Bryce
Welcome to day two of our Utah adventure.
This day's goal was to visit Bryce. To get from Zion National Park (Springdale, UT) to Bryce one goes through the eastern part of Zion through an area with beautiful, but very different terrain from Zion canyon, with surface texture known as slickrock.
This first photo shows this "layered" rock look clearly.
From there we proceeded to Bryce.
It snowed the day before, so we were treated to some dramatic scenery mid-summer visitors don't normally see:
At one point the raven cometh.
Inspiration Point was our last stop on the Bryce Canyon rim.
We returned to Zion and took the Canyon Overlook trail during, or more accurately, *after*, sunset. The Canyon Overlook view was spectacular, but for us it was getting quite dark. This is an ISO 3200 shot taken around 8:30 in the evening. We descended back down the trail mostly in just moonlight. We could have used our cell phones as flashlights but didn't even think of it.
